Penn Central Transportation Co.
Press Release - Week of Apr. 23rd, 2001

PC announced:

-Pacemaker® Update: Penn Central's new Pacemaker® Trail-Van service got off to a successful start with the inaugural train leaving Selkirk, New York's Perlman Yard early February 19th (the original February 1st start date was pushed back due to delays).  Using two of the recently delivered AC6000's (nos. 6001 and 6002) "PM-1" departed with seventy-four trailers.  Jason Martinez (VP - PM Operations) expects this train to increase to one hundred trailers over the next several months and looks to add a second train by year's end.  No word yet on any further market expansion.

-Summer Tour: Edward Claypole (PCT - CEO) has once again planned a system-wide tour set for this summer.  Though no dates were given, he plans to stop at most major terminals along the 20,000 miles of the PC system, and is even talking about town hall-style meetings with employees.  Official dates and stops should be announced within the next two months.

-AC6000's: The first of the AC6000's ordered last year arrived from Erie, Pennsylvania last month.  The first batch, numbered 6000-6024, will be followed by twenty-five more over the next year.  PC Motive Power Department officials plan to phase these units in as the older C30-7's and other Dash-7 series locomotives are retired.

-F40PH's: Two of Penn Central's six F40PH's, purchased from Amtrak last year, were destroyed by fire on March 26th, while undergoing refurbishment for business train service.  According to Altoona (PA) shop officials, "while the locomotive's were MU'd to a generator set-up, an unexpected power surge shorted a series of relays in both units causing the fire."  No injuries were reported.  Both units (nos. 10 and 11) sustained heavy damage and will be assessed for continued overhauling or scrapping.
